CHAPTER ELEVEN

Jed chewed on a mouthful of food and looked at the young woman before him.

‘Why are you so much against me finding Ellie?’ he asked. ‘I should have thought your only reason for tagging along with me is to find the gold. Once you’ve got it, you’ve no more need of me.’

‘A few days ago I would have agreed with you,’ she answered. ‘Now …’ She shrugged. ‘You’ve become part of my life.’

Jed continued chewing, trying to find a suitable answer.

‘Remember, Jed, you need me to pay for the horses to get us where we’re heading.’

‘I am aware of that,’ he said abruptly. ‘That don’t mean we’ve got to be tied together forever.’

Lily lowered her eyes and felt as if he’d struck her across her face.

‘No,’ she replied softly. ‘Of course not.’

They finished their meal in silence and Jed stood up.

‘Do I book myself a room, or am I sharing yours?’ he asked her. He felt uncomfortable being beholden to her for everything.

She did not answer right away and continued looking down at her empty plate. She had never intended it to be the way it had turned out, but she realized they both needed one another for different reasons. She needed him for his protection and he needed her to finance the operation.

‘As we’ll be spending the days – and nights – together, there hardly seems much point in being prudish about sharing a room. A room, mind, not a bed,’ she emphasized.

‘The thought had never entered my mind,’ Jed smiled.

She caught the twinkle in his grey eyes and found herself returning the smile.
